Testing strategies and selective rote memorization can boost a mediocre or decent score to a score that's good enough to pass muster. It isn't going to put someone on the far end of the distribution curve though. It's a rough selection process and I'd take it over something like GPA.

Google has been examining metrics for decades trying to figure out how to best determine which candidates would end up making the most productive employees. They've tried brain teasers, they've tried favoring Ivy League schools, they've tried hiring by GPA, they've tried favoring all kinds of criteria. So far the only one they found to have a strong correlation with success in the company is SAT score.
Everything else is either not correlated or has a weaker correlation than SAT scores do. Someone with a high SAT score who had to attend East Dakota A&M due to family issues is a better hiring risk than a Harvard or MIT graduate with a lower SAT score even though Harvard and MIT should have provided superior educations to East Dakota A&M.
